To truly understand Bitcoin, it helps to start by asking why Satoshi Nakamoto created it in the first place. The answer begins with the title of the white paper.
Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System
This short phrase contains the essence of Bitcoin: a system that allows people to send electronic cash directly to each other, without going through a central authority (peer-to-peer). This wasn’t just a technical innovation to enable online payments—it was a bold statement to redefine one of the most fundamental elements of the global financial system: trust.
For centuries, people have looked for ways to send value across borders. One such method was Hawala—an informal money transfer network where funds can be sent to another location without physically moving cash. Instead, trusted intermediaries pass along instructions. The entire system relies on one assumption: “the intermediary will keep their word.”
But this approach has two major problems:
Complete reliance on intermediaries — If the broker breaks their promise or delays the payment unfairly, there’s no way to recover the funds.
Lack of transparency — Transactions aren’t recorded in an official financial system, making them difficult to trace and vulnerable to misuse for illegal purposes or money laundering.

The SWIFT system, which underpins most modern international bank transfers, is in many ways a digital, institutional version of Hawala. Money doesn’t actually cross borders instantly—instead, banks exchange messages like “credit this account with this amount.” These messages often pass through multiple intermediary banks, with each step adding both time and cost.
Some of the key issues with SWIFT include:
High costs
Multiple intermediaries take a cut, leading to fees of the transfer amount. Small transfers can be even more expensive proportionally.
Slow processing
Transfers typically take 1–5 business days, and can take longer depending on public holidays, time zones, and the number of banks involved.
Lack of visibility
Senders often ...
