Bessent Not Worried About Market, Calls Corrections Healthy
“I’ve been in the investment business for 35 years, and I can tell you that corrections are healthy, they are normal,” Bessent said Sunday on NBC’s Meet The Press. “I‘m not worried about the markets. Over the long term, if we put good tax policy in place, deregulation and energy security, the markets will do great.”
“We are putting the policies in place that will make the affordability crisis go down, inflation moderate and as we set the sails I am confident that the American people will come our way,” said Bessent, ran Key Square Group before joining the administration.
There Are Plenty of Reasons to Be Optimistic About Europe

Yet, there are strands of optimism. Jean Monnet, one of the founding fathers of the European Union, famously noted, “Europe will be forged in crisis.” There are signs that the current crisis is spurring Europeans to address longstanding and intractable challenges. In particular, much of Europe’s leadership appears to have reached a real inflection point on how they think about the need for closer cooperation on defense and security. Three developments stand out.
The first is the arrival of Friederich Merz as a key player on the European stage. The leader of the Christian Democratic Union, who is almost certain to become Germany’s chancellor after his party came out on top in last month’s federal elections, has had an immediate impact. His plans for an unprecedented increase in defense and infrastructure investment — circumventing the country’s restrictive debt brake — is a second Zeitenwende, says Charles Grant, director of the Centre for European Reform, referring to the epochal change that current chancellor Olaf Scholz promised in 2022 when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The spending boost promises not only to revive Germany’s military but its economy, too. Goldman Sachs has raised its forecast for German growth in 2027 by one percentage point to 2%.
Merz’s support for increased German defense spending will inevitably have a knock-on effect on the policies of other European countries, Grant says. In particular, Merz’s insistence that Europe needs “independence from the USA” aligns him with Emmanuel Macron, who has long advocated “strategic autonomy.” That has boosted the beleaguered French president’s standing, which is important for Franco-German and wider European cooperation.
