For a man contemplating the possible loss of $600 billion, Nicolai Tangen is remarkably laid-back.

Tangen runs the world’s largest pool of money, Norway’s $1.8 trillion sovereign-wealth fund, of which about half is in U.S. stocks and bonds—mainly stocks. If the global trading system fragments into separate blocs divided by tariff barriers, he thinks the fund could lose more than a third of its value as the economy suffers and inflation picks up. It looks grim, even if the fund’s performance so far this year is about flat thanks to its offsetting exposure to Europe.

“You have a warm war and you have a cold war and you have a tech war and you have a trade war, you have a lot of fragmentation,” says the former hedge-fund manager. “It’s negative because it impacts economic growth and potentially inflation. So there’s potential for this being very negative.”

The key question, then: What can you do to protect against this playing out?

Tangen’s answer: nothing much. “You can’t really hedge against that scenario,” he says. “The way we operate is just by being very long-term and diversified.”

It’s true that investors have generally done well by assuming that time will heal all wounds. Set aside countries that lost a major war, and a broad portfolio of stocks has almost always beaten bonds, cash and inflation over the past century.
